is moving water the way to go?

   Why don’t we just move water to solve a drought? Apparently, this was a suggestion that was made by a candidate in California’s gubernatorial recall election to solve a drought situation by trying to connecting a pipeline from the Mississippi River to the Golden State. This idea was shut down by two drought experts saying that this is dangerous, not realistic, and very complicated to do because of the infrastructure would be expensive and more energy intensive. The map below is a U.S.  Drought Monitor map and it shows the western part of the U.S. is experiencing drought more than 98% while the Northeast is experiencing 15% of the land under a drought and the Southeast is only at 8%. Energy: Hydropower Pros and Cons

 Hydropower is not often talked about as a primary option for sustainable energy, however, 6.6% of energy produced in the U.S. is through hydropower, compared to solar energy which happens to only be 2.3% and is usually the first thought when someone mentions “clean energy.” The reason for this being the majority hydropower plants only give energy to large-scale, industrial operations.  Hydropower boasts a few positives that make it a viable option, those being that it is reliable, safe, and produces a very low amount of emissions. Other than that, they are fairly expensive to build, and they have a very realistic potential to cause droughts.
