Slaughterhouses causing Water Pollution

Looking into this article, “ EPA to Revise Outdated Water Pollution Standards for Slaughterhouses” by Greta Moran, you will learn how the waters especially the Cape Fear River is being polluted by slaughterhouses dumping out harmful chemicals into the water. As of 2020, more than a million pounds of nitrogen, phosphorus, etc. gets poured out making the water have a stench and flimy residue while the number of toxic blue-green algae blooms are growing that local residents have noticed showing the visible signs of water pollution’s. The EPA just announced that they are addressing this longstanding problem to update the national water pollution standards for slaughterhouses since 2004 for the first time, but the guidelines that were settled back in 1970’s are still being followed by majority of the slaughterhouses. If this continues and starts to interfere with our tap water we would be greatly affected where we can’t have safe and non-contaminated water for us to drink and the aquatic ecosystems being destroyed by all the waste.

I think that the EPA needs to step up and take care of this issue immediately. As most people prefer to consume meat, but we need to find a better way to handle this and not put our environment in danger.
