Picking Up Plastic (Riley Burns)

 As we all know, plastic is taking over our oceans. It is getting to a point where it is impossible for humans to physically pick it all up. But something phenomenal was invented. A Dutch inventor created a machine that picked up 20,000 pounds of plastic last week in the Pacific Ocean. The nonprofit organization for The mechanical way to clean the ocean is in hopes of removing 90% of the oceans plastic by the year 2040.

    It’s sad that the plastic in our oceans has gotten this bad. I’m glad to hear that this was invented. This could change the ocean completely. I loved your blog and was very informative.

    This is a very interesting blog and I think you put a lot of good information in it. I knew that there was a lot of plastic in the ocean. I also knew there was not much we could doo about it. I think that that is very interesting that they have a machine to help clean it up.

    The fact the plastics in the ocean has gotten so bad that we can’t physically get most of the trash as humans, but I’m glad that we have created a machine to help us. Hopefully this keeps up and we can decrease the number of plastics in the ocean.

Energy: Hydropower Pros and Cons

 Hydropower is not often talked about as a primary option for sustainable energy, however, 6.6% of energy produced in the U.S. is through hydropower, compared to solar energy which happens to only be 2.3% and is usually the first thought when someone mentions “clean energy.” The reason for this being the majority hydropower plants only give energy to large-scale, industrial operations.  Hydropower boasts a few positives that make it a viable option, those being that it is reliable, safe, and produces a very low amount of emissions. Other than that, they are fairly expensive to build, and they have a very realistic potential to cause droughts.
